Anibal Vallejo

“Color, for me, is a language unto itself—a tool for inquiry rather than mere representation.”

Aníbal Vallejo (B. 1975) is a contemporary Colombian artist originally from Medellín, Colombia. Coming from a lineage of artists, musicians, and writers, the artists grew up in an environment where artistic exploration was always something to be celebrated. He studied fine arts at the University of Antioquia and then fashion design at the Colombian College of Design, both in his hometown of Medellín.(Read more).

These formatives years of study laid the groundwork for a career marked by innovation and introspection. Vallejo’s solo exhibitions serve as portals into the depths of the human psyche, exploring themes of identity, memory, and perception. From “Narciso y lo que no vemos en el espejo” (“Narcissus and What We Don’t See in the Mirror”) to “Apuntes para el salón de Madame B. o la búsqueda del Gesamtkunstwerk,” (Notes for Madame B.’s Salon or the Search for the Total Work of Art) each showcase invites viewers to journey beyond the surface and into the domains of the unseen.

Moving beyond traditional techniques, Vallejo seeks to integrate new media into his process, reflecting on the essence of painting itself. Through both conceptual and formal explorations, he introduces diverse materials and investigates alternative resources, such as the incorporation of embroidery and textiles. This innovative approach that combines both of his formal fields of study adds depth and dimension to his work.

While Vallejo’s work has garnered international acclaim through participation in prestigious group shows and art fairs worldwide, including Paris, New York, and Lima, his roots remain firmly planted in his Colombian heritage. His pieces grace collections such as the Colección de Arte del Banco de la República and the Related Group in Miami, testament to the universal appeal of his vision.
